Initial Assessment

The first step in an initial assessment is to take a history of your pain and injury. After the history is taken, a physical exam is performed. This will take up the bulk of the one hour assessment. Caitlin or Shruti will watch your ability to move the injured area, which helps her gain an appreciation of your amount of movement. She will then make a diagnosis. Once the diagnosis has been made, Caitlin will explain your injury in detail and the cause of your pain. At this point she will encourage you to ask as many questions as possible. Finally, a treatment is performed and she will make a plan for your rehabilitation.

What Is An Initial Assessment?

You can expect to be with your physio for one hour. During this time we determine what your ‘Point A’ is. This is where you are now: what hurts, where it hurts, and really break down how it affects you. This could be anything from not getting a proper nights sleep, a mildly annoying pain, to it affecting simple everyday things you used to take for granted. We really try to dig deep as it is our duty to ensure we know where you are at to build the best possible plan for you.

Next we determine your ‘Point B’. This is your ideal and perfect day! We learn about how you would be feeling and what you would be doing if you didn’t have any pain or issues. Would you be driving to work pain free? Not worrying about picking up your grandkid without hurting your back? Maybe you just want to get a good nights sleep so you can finally think clearly.

The last piece is figuring out the road to get you from Point A to Point B. We do an in-depth assessment of your mobility, function, flexibility. We assess the integrity and quality of movement of your muscles, nerves, ligaments, and joints. You are screened for ‘red flags’ to ensure that you are appropriate for physiotherapy. If not, we send you to the appropriate health care provider!

Treatment is done to start the healing process and a therapeutic home exercise program is prescribed so that you can start feeling better and learn how to move efficiently as soon as you leave!

We are here for you for every step of the way and we promise to treat you like family and provide safe, respectful, and dignifying treatment each and every time you are in the office.
